Hunger Facts

Sometimes it is hard to comprehend what it's like to go without food each day. The impact of hunger in our communities and ultimately to our country may be felt for years to come.

Children

Hungry children, even those who experience only mild malnutrition during the critical stages of their development, may suffer irreparable harm. Research shows that preschool and school-aged children who experience severe hunger have higher levels of chronic illness, anxiety and depression, and behavior problems than children with no hunger. Hungry children have a harder time learning in school, shorter attention spans, and suffer more absences due to illness.

Faces of Hunger in Montgomery County

The majority of people seeking food assistance are not receiving government benefits. Only 18% of the households seen by area agencies are receiving Food Stamps. Government Welfare, or Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF), was the main source of income for less than 1% of households in 2000.

  •  40% are children
  • 10% are seniors
  • 10% are Female Head of Households
  • 47% are Anglo
  • 17% are African American
  • 35% are Hispanic
